A Casual Vacancy

Hi

Yes the book worm strikes again and I just finished the new J K Rolwing book A Casual Vacancy. The book was published on the 27th of September and is Rolwing's first adult novel. As you could probably guess I was super excited about this and had it on pre-order even if it did cost me £12 I really wanted to read it badly and was super excited. Now I was under no illusion that this book was anything like Harry Potter or even about a similar topic but I love J K Rolwing's style of writing and started the book the day it was released.

J K Rolwing A Casual Vacancy A Review
Keep It Vacant

The story is set in the west country in a place called Pagfold, a sleeping little everyone knows everyone else kind of place. The story starts with the death of Barry Fairbrother a parish councillor. The main back drop for the story is the residents of Pagfold and the fight for Barry's old Parish Council seat. The main themes are one of class and the difference between Pagfold and the 'Feilds' (A massive council estate) that fall into the parish boundary. The 'Feilds' are where Barry came from and he had fought for years that it should remain within the boundary to much opposition from other councillors.

Over all I didnt enjoy this book and I think thats why it took me so long to read it. The story line is to drown out with to many characters that I found hard to keep up with and had to re-read sections to remember who everyone is. The best way to describe this book is a very long episode of Eastenders but more middle class. I find it hard to believe that is book is described as a tragic comedy and even though the ending is sad I can honestly say it wasn't funny in the slightest for me. I was very disappointed with this book and if I was you I would give it a wide birth. If your unlucky enough to have already started reading it, do finish it because the end is the best bit unfortunately.

Thanks for reading and let me know if you enjoyed The Casual Vacancy

  1. I finished it this morning, I also thought it wasn't that easy to follow, and nothing really happened till right at the end, and I was expecting a lot more!! I mean I know it was a shock but she drew it out so that I thought something HUGE was going to happen!

    1. I know what you mean I expected a life changing moment but it didn't really happen did it. I was reading and interview with her and she said she had to write it for herself that's well and good but if no one likes it xxx

  2. I can normally get through a book in a couple of days, but this one? I've been reading it for about 3 weeks now (I think? since it came out!) and have only made it to page 60. It doesn't capture my imagination, it's very depressing and there are so many characters i never know who she's talking about!!

Not a good follow up to harry potter at all.. xx
